FC Barcelona plans own cryptocurrency, NFTs and metaverse presence

The president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, announced that the football club is planning to create its own cryptocurrency after it rejected offers to be associated with other digital asset enterprises.

Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Laporta also stated the club is planning to develop its own metaverse and repeated the club’s aims to release non-fungible tokens in the near future.
‘We do not have big corporations or shareholders behind us (and) that forces us to be imaginative, innovative, brave and be a step ahead in many areas’, added Laporta.
Unlike most other global football brands, FC Barcelona continues to be owned by its fans, with some 160,000 members instead of shareholders. In 2021, according to Forbes, it was the most valuable football club in the world.
Laporta did not provide more details about how Barcelona’s cryptocurrency would be used, if modelled around fan tokens already issued by many clubs around the world, as a way to pay for tickets and merchandise or something bolder.
"FC Barcelona already has something many brands would die for: global recognition and a strong fan base. It will be interesting to see if or how the club can make the most of the advantage and grow in the crypto world."
